Lord’s Touch: Why It Is So Special

This devotional comes from “Solid Joys,” the Android and iOS app from Desiring God that features daily devotions by John Piper.

Saul went to his house at Gibeah; and the valiant men whose hearts God had touched went with him. (1 Samuel 10:26)

The touch of God is an awesome thing because God is God.

Just think of what is being said here! God touched them. Not a wife. Not a child. Not a parent. Not a counselor. But God. The One with infinite power in the universe. The One with infinite authority and infinite wisdom and infinite love and infinite goodness and infinite purity and infinite justice. That One touched their heart. How does the circumference of Jupiter touch the edge of a molecule? Let alone penetrate to its nucleus?

The touch of God is awesome because it is a touch. It is a real connection. That it involves the heart is awesome. That it involves God is awesome. And that it involves an actual touch is awesome.

The valiant men were not just spoken to. They were not just swayed by a divine influence. They were not just seen and known. God, with infinite condescension, touched their heart. God was that close. And they were not consumed.

I love that touch. I want it more and more. For myself and for all of you. I pray that God would touch me anew for his glory. I pray that he would touch us all.

O for the touch of God! If it comes with fire, so be it. If it comes with water so be it. If it comes with wind, let it come, O God. If it comes with thunder and lightning, let us bow before it.

O Lord, come. Come that close. Burn and soak and blow and crash. Or still and small, come. Come all the way. Touch.

The Lord’s Touch

When you read a writing like that, what do you feel? Do you feel that longing in your heart to be touched by Lord; to be moved by the Creator Himself? Or do you feel that numbness in your heart; that the word is nothing and it does not affect you at all?

To be honest, I wax in between those feelings. In one side I longed for that touch. I had felt it and I wanted it again! But in the other side, I did not feel anything. It was just like a breeze that comes and goes away in seconds.

As active Christians, we should have that longing. Lord touched us and through that touch He made us His people. His touch is of encouragement, love, wisdom, revolutionary and motivation.

As I was writing this reflection down, the numbness itself melted away and that longing for God ruled over my heart. I am now ready for the touch.

May Lord Jesus touches your heart, as He always touches His people’s! Hallowed is His name, Lord Jesus blesses you!

  1. Wonderful brother! May God’s desires become your very own, for that is His desire that you become more like Him. As you drink from the living water, God will take the numbness away while showing you great and mighty things. God bless you.
